Advance Your Dental Practice with Sage Academy

About the Programme
With the help of SAAD-accredited trainers from the Society for the Advancement of Anaesthesia in Dentistry, Sage Academy proudly presents the Sedation Mentorship Programme. This program offers you expert guidance in both intravenous (IV) and inhalation sedation (IS), helping you expand your patient base and enhance your practice with advanced sedation techniques designed for both dentists and dental nurses.

Program Overview
This mentorship covers the essentials of both intravenous and inhalation sedation. After completing the accredited theory training, our experienced mentors at Sage Academy will supervise your practical cases to ensure you're prepared to provide sedation independently and safely.

Supervised Experience Requirements
Participants are required to complete 30 cases in total—20 intravenous sedation (IVS) and 10 inhalation sedation (IS)—but can choose to complete one or both of these techniques with us to meet the requirement:

● Intravenous Sedation (IVS)

Complete 20 IV sedation cases, managing patient care from induction through discharge.

For at least 10 cases, you'll also perform the dental treatment.

● Inhalation Sedation (IS)

Complete 10 inhalation sedation cases, managing patient care from induction through discharge.

For at least 5 cases, you'll also perform the dental treatment.

Location of Mentorship
Training sessions will take place at Sage Dental Referral Centre, conveniently located in London at 89-91 South Road, Southall, UB1 1SQ. This central location enables dentists from across the UK to access high-quality sedation training, and principal dentists can bring their sedation nurses along for training under senior mentors.

Participants will receive a set of essential documents, including:

● Logbook  for each technique.

● DOPS form  (Direct Observation of Procedural Skills) for each case.

● Practice Checklist

● Document Submission Checklist  (to be completed by your supervisor).

These documents will guide you through your supervised experience, with structured work-based assessments and continuous support from our trainers to ensure you meet all sedation syllabus requirements.

Steps to Qualify for Conscious Sedation (Dentist or Dental Nurse)

1. Registration and Eligibility:
o Dentists: Must be registered with the General Dental Council (GDC) and have a valid GDC number.
o Dental Nurses: Must be qualified dental nurses with GDC registration.

2. Enrol in an Accredited Conscious Sedation Course:
o Choose a course provider that is accredited by SAAD (Society for the Advancement of Anaesthesia in Dentistry) or STACCC (Sedation Training Accreditation Committee for Conscious Sedation).
o  The Dentist or the DCP has to ensure that the course follows the IACSD (Intercollegiate Advisory Committee for Sedation in Dentistry) standards, which set the national guidelines and training requirements for conscious sedation.

3. Complete the Theory Component:
o The initial theory session typically lasts 2-3 days and covers the principles, pharmacology, safety, and best practices for conscious sedation.
o The course will include lectures, case studies, and assessments to prepare participants for the practical component.

4. Gain Hands-On Clinical Experience:
o Mentorship Requirement: After completing the theory portion, the participant must gain practical experience under the supervision of a qualified mentor.
o Case Log Requirements: min 30 cases they need to complete
▪ IV Sedation Cases: Complete a minimum of 20 intravenous sedation cases.
▪ 10 cases where the supervisor performs the sedation, and the participant assists.
▪ 10 cases where the participant performs the sedation under the supervisor’s guidance.
▪ Inhalation Sedation Cases: Complete at least 10 inhalation sedation cases.
▪ 5 cases performed by the supervisor, with the participant assisting.
▪ 5 cases where the participant performs the sedation, supervised by the mentor.

o Ensure the logbook entries are thorough and meet the requirements outlined by the course provider.

6. Submit Logbooks and Assessments for Certification:
o After completing the theory component, practical cases, and logbook documentation, submit all records to the course provider.

Basics about some regulatory body involved.

IACSD (Intercollegiate Advisory Committee for Sedation in Dentistry) is different from regulatory bodies like the GDC (General Dental Council). The IACSD does not directly regulate dental professionals; instead, it provides national guidelines and standards for sedation training in dentistry, which are used as a framework by training providers, accreditation bodies, and the GDC itself.

Here's a breakdown of their roles and how they relate to each other:

IACSD (Intercollegiate Advisory Committee for Sedation in Dentistry)

● Purpose: IACSD sets the standards and guidelines for training and practice in conscious sedation for dentistry across the UK.

● Guidelines: The IACSD standards outline what is needed to train and certify dental professionals in sedation, specifying the levels of sedation and the practical and theoretical training required.

● Implementation: Training providers (like SAAD or university dental schools) follow IACSD guidelines to develop courses that meet these standards.

● Scope: IACSD does not directly certify individuals but ensures the training curriculum aligns with the GDC's sedation practice requirements. Their guidance is used by other bodies to assess whether sedation training meets national standards.

SAAD and STACCC

● Role as Training Providers and Accreditors: SAAD and STACCC are not regulatory bodies but act as accrediting and training providers. They design and deliver sedation training courses that align with IACSD standards.

● Accreditation Compliance: Their courses are reviewed to ensure they meet IACSD requirements, and successful participants from these courses are then recognised as trained in sedation practice.
